Since it is impossible to have natural scents direct from the
sources, such as herbs, spices, flowers, and trees, the next
best thing is a fragrance oil that contains the extract and
essence of a scent. Fragrance oils are made to smell like
the original scent-producer, and are versatile and strong.
The fragrance of the oil combined with an attractive oil burner
provides a lovely ambience as well as a talking point for
visitors to your home.

An ancient custom was to burn a little fragrant oil over a low
flame to scent a room; this is still one of the most effective
ways to perfume a living space. Fragrance oils are available
in a variety of scents, and are perfect for use in making
soaps, perfumes, incense sticks, creams and lotions, body
sprays, candles and shower gels. They can be used on their
own or mixed over oil burners or simmering pots.

Among the earliest items of trade in the world are fragrances--myrrh,
cedarwood, frankincense, and other perfumed products were carried
over long distances and treasured equally of more than precious
metals and gemstones. Historians say that Egyptians were importing
large amounts of myrrh more than 5000 years ago, when they were
beginning to learn to write and read. For centuries, traders from
the countries of Europe have travelled to the eastern part of the world
to conduct commerce in fragrant goods. It is said that fragrances were
the root cause behind much of our early history.

Essential oils are extracted from various plant parts like flowers, leaves, stems, roots, seeds, bark, resin or fruit rinds. Each plant contains only a tiny percentage of essential oil, so several kilos of the plant are harvested to extract a few millilitres of oil. Therefore, these oils are highly concentrated and usually dispensed in drops, or mixed with a base oil for massages. They contain hundreds of therapeutic constituents and are used in personal products, aromatherapy, and for sanitary and healthcare reasons.

Peppermint essential oil is said to be good for ailments like asthma, colic, fever, flatulence, headache, nausea, chest congestion and vertigo. This oil is supposed to be excellent for mental fatigue and depression, refreshing and stimulating with its menthol content. It is good for the skin and is used in lotions to treat sunburn, itchiness or inflamed skin. It helps fight bad breath and gum infections when used in mouthwashes. When used in an oil burner it is not only therapeutic it also keeps away mosquitoes and other insects.

Peppermint is native to the Mediterranean but is now grown in other countries in Europe, America, and Asia. Discoveries prove that peppermint has been used since ancient times in Egypt, Greece, Rome, China and Japan. According to Greek myth, a nymph called Mentha was turned, in a fit of anger, into a mint plant by her lover’s wife Persephone. According to Pliny, peppermint was used to crown the Greeks and Romans during feasts. It has been used medicinally in England for the last few centuries.

An essential oil is a concentrated liquid containing volatile aroma compounds from aromatic plants. It is usually distilled, sometimes expressed or solvent extracted. Eucalyptus essential oil is said to be antibacterial, disinfectant and an analgesic. It has been used to relieve coughs, colds, and other such respiratory troubles. It soothes muscle and joint pains, and helps to heal wounds, burns, ulcers and insect bites. In aromatherapy eucalyptus is said to promote activity, vitality, and energy.

For respiratory troubles, a few drops of this oil placed on a cloth can be inhaled through the mouth and exhaled through the nose for half a minute. It is applied directly on sores, rashes and insect bites. Add a few drops to your bath water to feel invigorated and refreshed. Soak your sore feet in a basin of warm water with 4-5 drops of this oil for relief. A few drops of oil in a diffuser is said to kill germs and airborne bacteria, a good idea for a sickroom. Eucalyptus essential oil is for external use only; always consult an authorised practitioner when using it as a health remedy.

Essential oils have been understood to have played a role in healing in ancient times in Egypt, China, and other parts of the world. They are said to be the oldest form of medicine and cosmetic, since they are distilled from plants, not involving complicated processes or machinery, but an art nonetheless. For their healing and aromatic properties, they were considered more valuable than gold to the ancients.

Hey! It may only be a move of several metres, but Clufty's Natural Tranquility now resides in the front of Inshops with a nice window display, instead of stuck round the back of the store where only the adventurous could find us. We have also doubled the unit size so there is extra floor space allowing more people in at any time to browse our range of products. As well as excellent lighting, we also benefit from natural light so it's a lot easier to view that gift you may be thinking of buying and also a lot easier to read the little writing on some of those labels - a lot harder to do in dismal artificial light. Even going to the cost of using natural daylight bulbs in the old unit, whilst making a great improvement, still wasn't as good a real natural light.

The move went well and most stock is now on display. There is still more work to do with displaying and shuffling stock round, but we are slowly getting there. It's harder than the last time I moved house! Will all be worth it in the end, and a great deal of new interest has been shown in the unit and I've had lots of great feedback, something I tend to thrive on. It's a lot easier to get it right when I know what the important people (the customer) actually wants, rather than always trying to second guess.

Essential Oils and Aromatherapy items seem to be getting harder to come by in the North East. Many times you only see them in shops along the coast. I really don't know why this is as essential oils are used by people all over the country, not just on the North East coast. Is Aromatherapy a holiday item only? I think not! I'm sure we are not the only stockists for Aromatherapy and Essential Oils in Consett or Durham, let alone the whole of the North East, but we do have a great little selection, and can also get more on request. Perhaps you know of a decent stockist in the North East of Aromatherapy and / or Essential Oils, and if so please do post a response and let people know. Otherwise, you'll just have to come and visit me in Consett, which isn't a bad little town you know.
